Melin Mynach 2013 Cyclo Cross Report

The turnout of Sosban Riders competitors and supporters at the local cyclo cross race in Gorseinon was truly inspirational, with jerseys and hoodies being seen from afar.  Over 30 racers from the club put on a race number to have fun in the mud in the Welsh Cyclocross League round 6 event.

The continuous downpours in the weeks leading up to this event made the conditions wet, but did not deter our committed children.  The under 8s race started with many determined Sosban Riders, eager to churn up the mud.  This was the first race for a few children and one of our youngest riders proved that you’re never too young to have a go.

Within the under 10s category, there were various levels of experience and riders could be seen giving support and sharing experiences right up to the starting whistle. Despite a few technical difficulties, all showed determination to finish the race.

The Under 12s saw five experienced Sosban Riders taking charge of the field with Lucy O fending off some of the top riders in Wales, crossing the finishing line in third place.   Her achievement  gave her dad something to aspire to in his first cyclo cross debut an hour later.

The ladies race saw many first timers eager to have a go!  Pippa Gardner, Liz John and Michelle Hill made their debut performance, joining Amanda Glanville on the circuit. On completion, the ladies stood contemplating their next cycling challenge.   Michelle Hill put in an amazing brave effort by competing in her first ever cyclo cross race, having never ridden on grass prior to the event.

The Sosban Riders competing in the senior race were soon known to all as their names were being chanted bu the partisan Sosban fans which could be heard all over the course.   The first timers Simon Owens, Wayne Oliver, Ryan Wooler and Steffan Gravelle joined Rhys Gravelle, Chris Bates, Peter Martin, Barry Evans and Lillian Martin for a mud fest 50 minutes amidst a field of over 100 riders.  All the Sosban gang stayed upright for the most part and finished smiling.  A cup of tea and a burger after the race helped to take the pain away.
