Llantarnam Cyclo-Cross Race Report

Sunday 22nd of September 2013, four intrepid Sosban Riders travelled across to Llantarnam High School,Cwmbran for the first round of the Welsh Cyclo-Cross league.

Unusually for Cyclo-Cross the weather was dry and warm and course conditions were very good apart from the damp forest section in the middle of the course.

First up to race was Harry Newton in the U8's race, he showed his usual determination and crossed the line in seventh place. Well done Harry!

No club members competed in the under 10's race maybe this will change in the forthcoming rounds.

Three riders took part in the under 12's race,Lucy Owens,Amy Cole and Owen Evans. It was Amy's first competitive race since breaking her arm recently, it didn't slow her down!,she got quicker as the race went on, over the coming rounds she is sure to go faster.

Owen competed in his first cyclo-cross race for sosban riders, he put in a good performance in this physically demanding sport, and will improve as the season goes on, well done Owen.

The start of the race was frantic  with thirty riders racing for the first corner, everyone got round the first two corners safely, but riders started to back up a little on the uphill as the leaders dismounted to get over the hurdle/jump at the top of the slope. The race settled down, Amy leading the way with Lucy close behind, both in pursuit of some Towy riders as "targets". Both riders were relieved to hear the bell and finish mid pack. A good start to the season for both riders.

A big thank you goes to the organizers, and to the ladies that made the yummy cakes that raised money for cancer research wales.

By Lucy Owens.
